The Uno is the one wheel electric motorcycle or unicycle

Invented by an 18 year old from Canada - Ben Gulak , the UNO is a one wheel motorcycle that truly balances out. Right now there are 3 working prototypes. It only has one switch which is the power switch! To go forward you push your body weight forward to tilt the machine. To back up, just lean back. The farther you lean the faster it goes. Whats more is that this bike is electric so its more eco friendly.
Check out this article on the design of it on Motorcylcemojo. Ben had some help from a few companies after selling his idea to them, but all they really did is give him some of the necessary components like the body, wheels, and the complex gyros to balance the cycle…

Pretty awesome. I don’t really think motorcycles need to be any less safe, but I applaud the design and the ingenuity! I do think something like this would be a fantastic low-speed/short-distance commuter, but can’t say I have any desire to see these doing 70mph on the freeway.

While I won’t be hopping on one of these anytime soon I do have to give cudos for the design–and from an 18 year old no less! Great job!

its really a awesome motorcycle. Its so deferent from other but I am confused about its balance.

I’m a 3rd generation biker, and although this looks like fun, it also looks like it’s unsafe in a must stop situation.
It would be a fun collectors item, but I really don’t look for it to catch on.

I do agree. In terms of safety I don’t think this motorcycle is safe. A well control on balance is required for this bike. But it sure does look good.
May 26th, 2008 at 12:46 pm |
That is awesome. Like everyone else I dont think I would ride it, but it sure looks fun!!!
May 27th, 2008 at 8:08 pm |
That is too cool! I’m not sure how one would balance on this though and it doesn’t look very safe, but it’s still really cool. I love the design of it. I would personally like to shake Ben’s hand.

It’s really cool, but looks so hard to drive, but the safety is lousy.
June 8th, 2008 at 9:20 pm |
how does it cost?
June 15th, 2008 at 10:43 pm |
That is awesome.
But, driving it is kinda difficult. Specially, for people who can’t balance very well.

Is that bike comfortable? I have some big doubt about tha.
July 15th, 2008 at 2:13 am |
First i have to give him a big round of applause cuz the way he is riding the bike and its really cool look at its style and the stand, no body thoughts that foot rests can be used as a stand.

Hey Nice Bike, i wish could have this cuz i can feel the ride of it.

Gotta admit that’s a neat looking bike. Please don’t let my boys see it!
August 28th, 2008 at 9:24 am |
I thought 2 wheeled motorbikes were dangerous! Please don’t tell me they are actually road legal! It could actually fit under my stairs! I have tried having a go on a unicycle and was awful, so i don’t think i would be very safe on one of those

That is one awesome bike. I wonder if it is hard to stay on it.
December 10th, 2008 at 11:48 am |
Aside from how risky it looks to ride, my big question is: How is it on sudden stops? Or emergency breaking??
December 15th, 2008 at 12:56 am |
so starting it while on its stand is a big no no, unless you want to ahnialate the front end haha.
Could benefit from a disc brake for those emergencies when you dont want to flatten your neighbours pet or something. also i have to give it to the person in the photos, because two wheels when the floor is damp is bad enough but one wheel when it has been snowing not a chance i would get on that thing. and i am very confused about the balance would the propultion of the wheel/bike compensate for the leaning ?
December 16th, 2008 at 4:11 pm |
since it has two wheels - even though they are attached makes it easy to balance - but the stopping would be hard unless you can think ahead and lean back before you hit the brakes. looks scary when it comes to safety maneuvering.
January 24th, 2009 at 5:50 pm |
Very interesting.Marketing might be a problem, unless its done properly.
January 24th, 2009 at 7:37 pm |
Um … it has TWO coaxial wheels. Not a big deal, but that completely changes the balancing dynamics. A retarded gerbil could balance on that machine. The lack of attention to detail by many observers the most astounding thing about this post.
February 3rd, 2009 at 10:02 pm |
It uses a gyroscopic stabilizing system, so it’s not as hard to ride as you might think. I also would like to know where to buy one.
February 16th, 2009 at 9:27 am |
O my God,
It can bring great disaster for the rider.I don’t think that its safe for guys .

this is cool!!

funky looker, but what happens if you pull the brakes hard? and how does it steer in and out of traffic?
June 1st, 2009 at 1:50 pm |
looks cool. Does is come in an all black model?
June 8th, 2009 at 3:11 am |

So if you lose balance and fall forward, you will go faster? Nice design, rich kids will play.
November 17th, 2009 at 12:38 pm |
This reminds me of a Segway, but much cooler, and more socially acceptable! I’d ride it to Bike Night at any local bar.
I’d love to see the technical specifications.
It doesn’t seem any more unsafe than a regular motorcycle (keep in mind that there’s probably less weight, therefore less momentum to stop.)
Nice.

i think this is a super unique bike, i would most deffinetly buy one if it is available, i dont believe its any less safe as a 2 wheel cycle. Need to use a helmit, and maybe if people are worried so much about saftey a special lisence would help, that way we dont have people wo cant get the lisence cant drive it. that would help.
You did a really good job on the design! FLAWLESS!!
thankyou so much for makin something new to the world! well done!
i will suport you in anyway to get it on the market!
your friend,
Christian

Thanks for the effort you took to expand upon this topic so thoroughly.
Tires are among the most important components of your car. They are the only components of your car to make contact with the surface of the road, so they alone transmit the energy produced by your car’s engine to the ground. They determine in large part the overall handling and performance of any motor vehicle. For all of these reasons, it is important that you are careful when shopping for a new set of tires. There are many tire options covering wide ranges of price, performance, and appearance.

So could two people fit on there and try to ride? How safe could this thing really be? I’d like to see the tricks it can do (i.e. spin etc). Very stylish looking though.
August 2nd, 2010 at 11:19 am |
I don’t know what others see, but i see 2 wheels
August 6th, 2010 at 11:44 am |
I WANT ONE. That simple. While it is true that in the cenario of needing t break suddenly- or possibly die- it is not safe i believe, if one is careful and does not use it for freeway or stupid tricks, this would be very cool.

The guys a genius to be able to conceive and build some thing like this. OK it’s a bit whacky but if whacky had never existed we would all still be pushing pedals! Credit where it’s due. Practical? I would hate to have to do an emergency stop could be a be rough on your chin! I can see a useful use for it though, a variation on speedway racing, 6 of these on the start line 3 laps round the track last one standing / running wins. What do you think? Well done that man, what are you going t build next I wonder? Andy Pandy UK.
November 17th, 2010 at 12:13 pm |
wow this is one of the coolest things that i have seen in a very long time.
but i do not think it would be safe to ride on the rodes these days………do not get me wrong it is really cool….:)
i wounder if it goes faster than the two wheel ones.
December 3rd, 2010 at 4:17 pm |
Looks like 2 seperate wheels and tires to me so its not a “unicycle”…Duo? Kinda looks like a driveway toy and not serious transpo BTW Wheelies are out of the question…
December 21st, 2010 at 10:50 am |
Let me know when they invent the one with NO wheel!!! Thank you!!!
December 22nd, 2010 at 8:07 am |
How does electric equate to more eco friendly? most electric in the us is still produced using fossil fuels, and the grid is already taxed with all of our gadgets plugged in 24/7. Time to be reasonable on making ourselves feel good by claiming to be greener than the next guy.
Still, a very cool concept. I would love to take it for a spin, but I dont think I would ride on the open road.
December 26th, 2010 at 4:08 am |
Looks great, hands down. But, if you are riding fast or against the wind, the wind will cause you to lean back which, in turn, will cause the bike to slow down. So that is problematic. The same happens when you try to accelerate. When trying to stop suddenly, you lean backward and the Uno will diminish speed and push you to the front, which, in turn, will be its signal to accelerate.
Great invention, but too dangerous for speeds exceeding 25 km/h.

WOW,
I have been ridding & have been involved in motorcycling, ever since I bought my first bike, a Norton 750cc, Commando, in 1967.You have come up with a concept bike I never thought possible, I have got to ride your machine. Is their a possibility you will be at Daytona Bike Week, 2011, would love to get up close look, and maybe a test ride.
Regards
Richard

Such a short article about the unicycle, I wonder why so few of these critics read it carefully. Like all motorcycles it is unsafe but used for fun and as far balance, the article states that it uses complex gyros. I could easily see this being further developed and used for entertainment and competition like skateboards, bicycles, dirt bikes, snow boards, etc… Good luck Ben, I’m rooting for you.
January 4th, 2011 at 1:07 am |
The Uno is the one wheel electric motorcycle or unicycle It is a great invention but the main problem is this bike is only good for one person, how about my back ride?
January 12th, 2011 at 1:59 pm |
When thinking about how easy or hard it would be to balance and stop on this dynamic creation simply think of the SEGWAY; It must use simular technology, logically. The more you lean your weigh forward the faster it goes and when you want to stop you shift your weigh back and it slows, stops and perhaps eventually reverses. It is a great design and look like a lot of fun as mentioned by many observers. Like most things in life, fear will cause many to pass-up a great opportunity to help the enviroment, the economy and ease traffic congestion in overpopulated urban areas. I love this technology and the way it has been applied! A job well done!
