Save power, money and earth with your power strips

Found via, the Alternative Consumer, this device called the Tricklesaver plugs into your computer peripheral power strip and your computer. It will then sense when your computer is in shutdown or standby mode, and then power down the power strip accordingly! Excellent as most of your peripherals use power when your computer is in hibernate or shutdown mode. Power adapters for peripherals waste a lot of energy and have no off switches.
It has been estimated that while there is a small amount of waste energy per household in the U.S., it does add up to 10% of household consumption. Estimates say that there is enough wasted energy in the U.S. from standby power to power the countries of Vietnam, Peru, and Greece!
For now there is still no price, but it will go on sale in January. There will be a model for other electronics such as your living room home theater too or other appliances. Check Tricklestar.

Not sure how useful this really is, it probably generated more carbon dioxide in the construction of the mechanism than it will save throughout its whole working life.

Interesting product although I cannot tell what the USB is for. Is that supposed to be plugged in as well so it knows when the computer is off? It is a great idea and if it is cheap enough I would consider getting one. Thanks for sharing.

These are a great way to save energy in your household. There are many devices besides your computer that still use power when they are off. The savings to your energy bill and the planet can add up very quickly.

I like the idea of the power strip. Was shocked to learn that standby power can power whole countries. Will try to turn off and unplug system than put it on standby.

I think that some of the newer APC UPSs and power supplies do the same thing. It’s a great idea.

Cool - do you know if it actually shuts off the electricity supply as such? If it does I think it would be good for peace of mind too, as I worry about leaving my computer plugged in if I’m away for the weekend or anything. I’ve got a power surge thing on the plug, but this might give extra protection towards that too.

What if the computer is in standby or hibernation? Does the power strip “think” the computer is shutdown? Does anyone know one way or another? I use hibernate alot so that concerns me. Other than that, it seems pretty neat.
