Bamboo laptops benefit the environment
Treehugger had a good article on whether bamboo laptops are beneficial to the environment. Besides the eco friendly looks that wood gives there are benefits to using bamboo.
Bamboo is more biodegradable than plastic, and bamboo can be harvested in a sustainable way since it grows very fast like a weed. Plastic uses too much chemicals and is difficult to biodegrade. You can recycle plastic, but we must develop computer components in a way that they can be taken apart for recycling. Until then we are just going to see these hazardous electronic parts back in the landfill.
Anyways there are more options for bamboo computers such as the:

Asus Eco book is $2000 but only includes 1 GB of ram.

Dell has the Studio Hybrid which has a bamboo sleeve option. Ultra sleek design with power efficiency. Its get just about the same features as a regular pc except its 80% smaller and uses 70% power. These cool laptops are portable and affordable. Go Dell!!

The Fujitsu laptop is actually made with cedar wood. Even the plastics are made of bio-based plastics! It’s only a prototype, but it could be the future for us. In 2002, Fujitsu became the first computer manufacturer to develop corn-based plastic and adopt the environmentally friendly material for PC parts. Original bio-based plastic has been used for a limited number of smaller parts and gradual improvements to its properties to satisfy various manufacturing requirements and increase the percentage used in its notebook PCs. The newly developed bio-based plastic accounts for about 30% of the plastic material in the housings of 2 of their prototype laptops.

The Asus one is environmentally friendly but actually looks more better than a plastic cased laptop. If only they made and environmentally friendly version of their £200 netbook then I would have one!

These look great, they look quite heavy though?

I am now wonder about my iPod bamboo style.
I hope I don’t get sme type of beatle crawling through though.

Sorry one thing I did not think before.
What about how much energy is used to farm the bamboo? i,e, fuel for machinery, fuel for transport, energy to cut and shape the bamboo, then disposing of the remnants.
Transport of finshed units would cost more becuase they are heavier, has all that manufacturing costs been factored in to making these, to decide are they really helping the enviroment??
October 16th, 2008 at 12:31 pm |
Those are really cool, but I would be so scared that the laptop would crack or break as it went through my daily life. I would loev to have one, but cannot afford it.
October 17th, 2008 at 12:26 am |
Wouldn’t these be too heavy? I hope not as these are great for the environment.

I never understood the point of “green stuff”. What are the benefits of buying a $2000 laptop made of bamboo, when the same laptop, made of plastic and other not environmentally friendly materials cost 3 times less?

One way to make laptops more environmentally friendly would be to make them more reliable. Most electronic products seem to have such a short lifespan, the manufacturers only build them to last a couple of years. This works for them anyway because people are encouraged to upgrade to a new model anyway. Laptops are notoriously unreliable (even from respected manufacturers) and usually cost a fortune to fix, making it more viable just to buy a new one, so we end up with another one going to landfill and the environmental cost of building, transporting and selling a new laptop!

Personally, I have just accepted the toxins in my laptop as a price of doing business. And, speaking of price, discount codes or promotional codes from the manufacturer would go a long way in bringing the price into a more acceptable range. What really caught my attention though was that this laptop reminds me of a modern, wooden frame and body car that I recently saw in an auto magazine. Are we on the cusp of returning to bio-based construction materials instead of petroleum-based (plastic) construction materials? I certainly hope so. They are better for us, clearly more sustainable, and aesthetically more pleasing.

Logistics Wisdom Provides Guidance on Importer Security Filing Software
ISF 10+2 Interim Final Rule went into effect January 23, 2009. Today, five months later importers are still struggling with the impact, costs and challenges of Importer Security Filing (ISF) compliance. The one year grace period for implementation is nearing its deadline. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is scheduled to begin penalty enforcement against non-compliant organizations in seven months.
For those companies who are studying the costs and challenges of implementing Importer Security Filing ISF compliance, Logistics Wisdom offers the following guidance.
First, the new Importer Security Filing ISF regulations apply to United States ocean imports only. Do a study of your last twelve months ocean import activity. Determine how many ocean bills of lading (B/Ls) you had.
Second, ask both your custom broker and logistics provider about their ISF procedures. Gather as much information as you can.
Third, talk with several ISF software providers who have ISF 10+2 solutions. Ask for a demonstration of their software. Importer Security Filing ISF regulations require EDI transmission of the 10+2 data elements.
Fourth, every ISF 10+2 software provider offers a different solution. Many solutions have features like built-in databases, templates to eliminate time-consuming repetitive data entry for repeat shipments, and shipment tracking. The best solutions are hosted SaaS real-time applications that offer customization, flexibility and can be easily updated and maintained.
Fifth, currently ISF 10+2 software providers are charging between $5.00 to .85 cents per ISF transaction with varying fees for filing amendments to the original ISF record. In addition, most software providers charge a flat setup fee. It is important to calculate the total spend cost prorated to each Bill of Lading. Beware of off-shore foreign agents offering low-cost solutions without a secure CBP EDI connection.
Overall, Freightgate’s ISF Solution named Compliance-Trek! has one of the lowest cost per ISF transaction combined with user-friendly screens providing real-time visibility. Compliance-Trek’ offers seamless integration into existing ERP’s along with special features such as event-driven alert functionality, RDV technology and daily updating with the latest U.S. Customs and Border Protection information.
Sixth, the biggest challenge to Importer Security Filing ISF compliance is obtaining timely accurate data from the overseas suppliers, logistics handlers and other intermediates. Select ISF software with RDV technology. RDV is known as Role Dependent View. RDV allows users only to view information and input data which is important to their participation in the ISF compliance process. RDV ensures data confidentially and security.
For the latest details on the Importer Security Filing requirements visit the Logistics Wisdom website: http://www.logisticswisdom.com
