Clear sustainable habitat ant farm made from special gel

This cool looking ant farm allows you to see ants at work. Its based on a 2003 space shuttle experiment. It actually requires no food as the ants feed off the special clear non toxic gel.
You have to order the ants by mail order though. I wonder if you can just get some ants from the yard… Anyways the ant farm is an affordable $19.95 from the Discovery Channel Store.

I’m not sure this counts as a sustainable gift. I’ve also read that it’s not very pleasant for the ants.

Your right its not sustainable. Maybe I was just thinking that just because its a “nature” toy it will make you focus on the environment.
I don’t like seeing animals, even insects caged up either. I think I will delete this entry soon!
It was a cool NASA experiment at least…

We sell a version of this item at our website, and the ants lasted about a month. Technically, ants in general only live 1-3 months. It’s a neat product, and you could even let them create the tunnels, then let them go outside to be free and enjoy the lit up gel artwork by itself. Some of these items light up at the base, and some don’t. Our’s becomes a night light after the ants finish their masterpiece.
