The Asus EcoBook will be the first Bamboo laptop

Don’t get to exited yet as it is due for a 2008 release. It features recyclable materials and it will be modular in design so you can easily take out and replace parts instead of throwing the whole thing away or handing it down …Also paints, sprays and electro-plating have not been used on the components. It should make for easy recycling then…
Some wise commenter said that bamboo consumption would lead to less bamboo population and thus less pandas!! But of course bamboo can probably be harvested in a sustainable way and a laptop is used for years anyway before being thrown away. Hey at least the case is biodegradable. It’s not waterproof I would say, but then most laptops are not…

One would have to be careful using this laptop in tropical climates. Termites will have a feast!!
How about recycling old computers and using their old parts? the casing etc?

Recycling computers is a complicated topic. I have read a lot of it ends up in Africa as trash where workers have to touch a lot of the toxic materials and the leftovers go into their landfills.
A lot of sensitive computer parts are made of rare minerals and the computer makers are trying to save by recycling their old computers and thus saving money… Some cell phone manufacturers are already doing this…
